Wamesit Lanes On Target For Fall In Tewksbury

TEWKSBURY — The walls are up at Wamesit Lanes, soon to be the region’s newest entertainment destination.

After a harsh winter delayed the start of construction, the facility is now set to open in late September or early October.

The 45,000-square-foot entertainment center, situated on the former site of the Motel Caswell, will feature 10-pin and candlepin bowling, an arcade, golf simulators, a bocce-ball course, a restaurant and lounge, and an outdoor seating area.

The $12.4 million project has been hailed by many as one that will attract people to Tewksbury and improve the look of Route 38 in an area that is considered a gateway to town.

Don MacLaren Jr., who co-owns the property with his father, Don Sr., said they started construction in earnest on March 16 after laying the building’s foundation before the winter set in.

“The winter really killed us, just with not being able to get on to the site,” MacLaren Jr. said. “We just had to wait around for the weather to turn around. It was a little discouraging when reality set in, but now we’re back up and running with it.”

As their opening day approaches, the father-and-son team are planning more and more specifics of how the place will operate. To keep as many as 48 taps flowing in the bar area, they’re planning to partner with local breweries.

“It’s a local facility, and I feel like we wouldn’t be doing it right if we didn’t get local breweries involved and the local community. That’s what it’s all about,” MacLaren Jr. said.

Wamesit Lanes to brighten town’s ‘gateway’

TEWKSBURY — A landmark in Tewksbury came down last fall, as the much-maligned Motel Caswell was demolished to make way for a new bowling and entertainment complex.

Wamesit Lanes, set to open this summer in an area considered a gateway to town, may be a harbinger of things to come in Tewksbury.

The property’s new owners and town officials say the new business could be an economic jump-start for Route 38, spurring growth and providing a model for how to bring successful development to the main thoroughfare.

“What the town lacks is something for somebody to do,” said Don MacLaren Jr., who bought the property for $2.1 million and is building Wamesit Lanes along with his father, Don MacLaren Sr., for a total of $12.4 million.

“We had a great opportunity to work with the town and the Caswells to bring something that is going to make a staple in this gateway to Tewksbury, and provide a lot of other opportunities for businesses to come in and join that gateway, and for other residents and surrounding people to spend their dollars here in Tewksbury and build the economic growth it really needs.”

Wamesit Lanes will feature 10-pin and candlepin bowling, an arcade, golf simulators, a bocce-ball course, a restaurant and lounge, and an outdoor dining area with fire pits in a more than 45,000-square-foot facility. It’s expected to employ up to 120 people.

Jim Campanini: Rte. 38 ‘reinvention’ unites community

It’s great to see the town of Tewksbury making a big economic-development push along the Route 38 corridor that stretches from Lowell to Wilmington. The town, in conjunction with The Sun, published a special supplement on Friday, Jan. 23, outlining infrastructure improvements and “reinvention” ideas for what Town Manager Richard Montouri calls “our main street.”

A project of this size and scope unites a community and serves as a blueprint for the future. Just like the Boston 2024 bid for the Summer Olympic Games, where infrastructure improvements are vital to the state whether the games come here or not, Tewksbury officials are making a bold bid to change the Route 38 landscape for the better — even if some of the proposals don’t get off the ground.

A New Beginning

TEWKSBURY

Plans are underway to turn property that holds a longstanding Tewksbury motel into a bowling alley and family entertainment center.

Donald MacLaren and his son, Donny MacLaren, held a meeting with the press and town officials at the Pike House on Tuesday, May 27, to announce they had entered into a purchase agreement to buy the Motel Caswell at 450 Main St. The pair plan to convert it into a bowling alley and family entertainment center. The motel is owned by Russ Caswell.

The MacLarens were joined by Steve Bourgeois, who is working with them in sales and business development. Also at the meeting were Town Manager Richard Montuori and Steve Sadwick, Tewksbury’s director of community development.

Motel Caswell to become Wamesit Lanes Sale price set at $2.1 million

TEWKSBURY – A team of local businessmen announced Tuesday they reached an agreement to purchase the Motel Caswell property for $2.1 million and develop a multi-million dollar family entertainment complex on the 4.3 acre site near Route 495.

Donald MacLaren, his son Donny, and Steve Bourgeois appeared with Town Manager Richard Montuori and Director of Community Development Steve Sadwick at the Pike House to announce the venture.

In Tewksbury, it’s so long Caswell, Hello Wamesit Lanes!

TEWKSBURY — Guests staying at the Motel Caswell will pack their bags for the last time at the end of this month, when the Route 38 staple closes its doors after 59 years in the Caswell family.

The motel will close at noon on Monday, Aug. 25, according to owner Russ Caswell.

The motel is expected to be demolished in late August or September to make way for a new entertainment complex, owned and operated by Tewksbury residents.

“We’re looking for it to be a New England destination,” said Don MacLaren Jr., who is in the process of buying the 4.5-acre property with his father, Don MacLaren Sr. The sale has not been finalized, pending approval of the demolition permit.
